NSQHS Standards – Live Literature Searches

About the searches

These PubMed live searches have been developed, tested and endorsed as part of the Health Libraries for the National Standards Research Project (HeLiNS), a joint initiative of Health Libraries Australia and Health Libraries Inc . The searches provide updated results for topics aligned to the Australian National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards. These searches were first released in July 2018. These current searches were updated in October 2020 and have been adapted and expanded to reflect the NSQHS 2nd edition. Previous versions of these searches can be located in the PANDORA Archive.

The searches have been created by a librarian with expertise in searching for evidence on health. They have undergone extensive internal testing, but have not been developed as objectively derived and validated search filters. Each search (and subset search string) has undergone consultation and review by a panel of health librarians with searching expertise and knowledge of the needs and interests of the targeted audience.

ISSG Search Filters

What are search filters?

Search filters are collections of search terms designed to retrieve selections of records. Search filters may be designed around a specific study design or by topic or by some other feature of the research question.

Search filters may be designed to maximise sensitivity (or recall) or to maximise precision (and reduce the number of irrelevant records that need to be assessed for relevance).

All search filters and all search strategies are compromises and an assessment of the performance of filters for your own research should always be made.

The InterTASC Information Specialists' Sub-Group (ISSG) Search Filter Resource is a collaborative venture to identify, assess and test search filters designed to retrieve research by study design or focus.

The ISSG has developed a quality checklist to help you assess published filters for your research requirements.
